Hi

Immediately outside the show room was luxurious new S class, gleaming sliver and easely the bigger car there. Charles paused by it before entering the show of room and wandering with what he hoped was critcal detachment among the new cars within.

What is meaning of -wandering with what he hoped was critcal detachment among the new cars within?

Thanks

"wandering with what he hoped was critical detachment" means he was hoping that he was being objective in his evaluation of the cars or that he, at least, looked as though he had not yet made up his mind.
