Baldimo, just a quick word on the original topic. From a government standpoint, there are no heroes in this sordid affair. However, to blame Mayor Nagin is to lose sight of the structural problems in FEMA and Homeland Security that Katrina exposed.
Local municipalities are ill-equipped to deal with disasters of Katrina's magnitude. They have neither the budget nor the expertise. We pay income tax to the Federal government to intervene at times like this when the municipal authority is overwhelmed.
Not only did the Feds fail miserably on that account, but they actually amplified the problem by spinning. As late as thursday after the Hurricane, Brown, the FEMA director, was claiming that FEMA had the situation in hand when that was obviously inaccurate to anyone watching CNN.
The Feds were slow to act and they were underprepared. This is without even mentioning the underfunding and winnowing of the Levee maintenance budget over the last several years on a federal level. The higher death toll is a direct result of federal neglect and incompetence.
I will pray for you while you're in Afghanistan. A good friend of mine was over there not too long ago and I hope folks over there have their stuff together better than FEMA over here.
I not a Bush supporter. However, I'm amazed by how Bush supporters refuse to assign any culpability to him. The buck stops in the Oval Office. The man was on vacation and was anemic in his response. Those are the facts and Americans are dead as a result. What do you say to their families...sorry?!!
