BS, Cyclo. I resent your comment and SHOCKED it would come from YOU.

IN MY HOUSE, and I will admit to being "old fashioned", you live in MY HOUSE you LIVE BY MY RULES. No democracy, total dictatorship. My daughter is 19 years old and I made her a deal during her sohpmore year in high school. If she earned a B+ Average or higher and held a part time job at least in the summer, I would pay for her college. C to B I'll pay half, lower than C...NOTHING.

She achieved her goal and I lived up to mu promise.

MY HOUSE, MY RULES. No govt will tell me what is best and neither will you.

I'm not trying to tell you that you can't run your own house, or make whatever deal you wish with yer daughter.

Just saying that paying for someone else's continued existence past the point of their societal maturity smacks of a different set of values than those you normally espouse, and you may want to address that.

Please understand that I have nothing against yer daughter or her further education (I'm a big fan of college); just saying that paying for other people's schooling is a socialistic idea, no matter what the family relations, no matter what the circumstances. Get me?

whojo, Your martinet* rules for those in your household sound a lot like what you profess to hate about "big government." It sounds more like you don't like anyone on this planet to tell you what you can and can't do.

BBB

* martinet \mar-t'n-ET\, noun:
1. A strict disciplinarian.
2. One who lays stress on a rigid adherence to the details of forms and methods.

He is an unmitigated tyrant, a martinet, the sort of man who disapproves of his son's eating the morning oatmeal with sugar -- instead of salt, which he himself prefers.
--David Quammen, "Punishing Natty," New York Times, April 14, 1985

His insistence on strict discipline began to earn him a reputation among his men as an unfeeling martinet.
--Michiko Kakutani, "Still Pondering the Myth Of Custer's Last Stand," New York Times, May 28, 1996

At first, the recruits hate and fear the sergeant, but gradually they come to realize that he's been turning them into soldiers. It is the example of this unlovable martinet, not the "Good Joe" who replaces him, that will help them survive in combat.
--Anthony Quinn, "Revolutionary Dead Ends," New York Times, April 29, 2001

Players coached by him have cursed the day they ever set sight on such a merciless martinet.
--Gerry Thornley, "Chief architect oversees grand plan," Irish Times, February 19, 2000

A martinet is so called after an officer of that name in the French army under Louis XIV.

I will NEVER be told by the likes of YOU and anyone who thinks like you HOW I RAISE MY CHILDREN. I do not need govt to tell me HOW I RAISE MY CHILDREN. I need a govt to protect me, build some roads, build some schools and regulate commerce and trade. For that I am willing to pay a tax.

If you feel you are not capable of raising your children and need govt to help you raise your children then I do not feel sorry for you and I do not want to have one penny of my taxes to go and pay for your inabilities.

I feel the same way about the president and congress.
