What would you say the most important or significant events in the last decade were? Events that changed the way countries or people viewed each other? Events that made breakthroughs in medicine, technology, or civil rights? What examples can you think of?
September 11th as most important day in 21st century so far.
In 20th Century I'd say..
1. D-Day, 6th of June, showed that Britain and America had balls. Doomed nazi Germany. Stopped a possible Soviet juggernaut driving straight across Germany.
2. Pearl Harbour, date escapes me, 1941. Brought the massive US into the war.
3. Kursk, 12th of July, at the moment of near victory, Hitler called off his last great gamble in the east, leading to the rout of the entire Eastern front.
In times past...
Battle of Salamis 480B.C. .. Freed the greeks from a massive Persian invasion..
Battle of Tours, a Frankish Army defeats a Muslim invasion from Spain. Ensures Europe stays Christian.
Seige of Vienna, ends the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into Europe.
The Mongrols turning around after the death of Gengus Khan.. Europe saved.
First off, the question was "of the last decade" meaning 1995-2005.
And the answer is.....
Hmm....
I wanna say 9/11....
But....
I'll go with....
When the European Union star/actually become serious? Seems only recently....
Both Gulf Wars... and the end of cheap petrol... It's gone up 100% at least since 1990..
Yeah, in the last 10 years I can't think of anything that comes near to equalling the impact of 9/11/01. The 21st Century certainly started off with a bang. Sorry.
But, of course, we're all thinking in Western terms. I'll bet the people in Southeast Asia think the recent tsunami is the most devstatingly important event of the 21st Century so far. It did claim more lives than 9/11.
a heck of alot more... 200,000 ive heard! Iran's desision to persue a nuclear future! time will tell..
No offense guys, but a LOT of stuff since 9/11 has had higher civillian casualties.
For comparison:
9/11: 3 000 civillian casualties
Bombing of Baghdad by US, sorry I mean "Coalition" forces: 6 000 civillian casualties
And y'know, the tsunami and the hurricane and all that other stuff that I don't possess exact figures for at my fingertips at the moment.
