We have had an unusual month of rain -- 138 mm (normal is less than 50), plus in June we got 102 mm. Add to that, lots of lightning and thunder, and some areas got hail. Hardly any sun! It has been overcast for nearly 2 weeks, which is a long time for where I live. Last year we had a water advisory so that was bad for our gardens (we could only use wastewater or rain barrels); the year before we were smoked out by fires in OR, WA, BC, AB, and Sask all summer, so got no sun that year - I honestly wonder why I bother anymore. Can you believe my peas are not done yet? It's almost August! The rain is great, and very needed, but a little sun would go a long way. How about you?
@Mame,
We live in a coastal desert and summers are almost always too dry. I've been hooking up more gutters and rain barrels. Spring was wet though. My salad greens are doing well, cukes and tomatoes are starting to come in. Onions and garlic are ready to be pulled and cured.
It's smoky today – it's as if the sun were shining through wax paper.
@Mame,
It's winter here so not much actual gardening being done at the moment. I have planted some seeds in trays that I'm keeping inside, they've started sprouting and should be ready to go in the garden in another month or so when spring starts.
It's almost August and we haven't had 100° weather yet in Dallas. Everywhere else, people are suffering, but we're smiling in Dallas.
For decades here the mantra was no planting until May 24th (holiday) but last year I planted some seeds in the soil in early May and they were fine; other years, we'll get a hailstorm on June 2nd and everything's ruined. This year, seeds would have drowned. We have two more weeks of crap weather to look forward to. So, I have a lot of foliage, a few tomatoes (early days here), onions need more sun and time, garlics are looking okay, potatoes are ??, herbs are fine, strawberries - meh. Maybe we'll get three more months of growing season?
Hard to predict anything with any success anymore. sigh.
Bahstin has been a
rollah-coastah, temp-wise... not much rain...
the hibiscus just turned twenty seven
Water's getting to be a problem. It's amazing – or should I say frightening – how quickly a few garden plots will go through 350 gallons of collected rainwater. I don't dare use too much well water. Looks like two weeks of clear, hot, dry weather. Of course, "hot" is relative – low 80's up in this corner of New England is considered scorching. I don't think I've ever seen it in the triple digits.
@hightor,
according to weather.com we've had 15 days of 90 or more this year, including a 100 and a 99.
hopefully august behaves a bit more autumnally...
