LE, It's not uncommon to buy a house here over 100 years old. The house my condo is in was built in 1900. Actually very typical for anything near or in the city.

Each city or town charges their own tax rate. It is based on the amount your home is assessed. So for example if you own a home assessed at a $200,000, your town has a tax rate of $15.00 per thousand, you pay $3,000 a year. As home values increase, assuming the tax rate stays the same you pay more. Also, a town can increase or decrease their tax rate. Funny thing is my town mayor proudly claimed he lowered property taxes. When you actuality the majority of home owners are paying higher annual property taxes, because the tax rate went down, while assessed values skyrocketed.

What fishin states in true in theory, however, in reality is not true at least in my recent experience. As a result we are having the town re-assess our home as they so overvalued it. They have confirmed they are changing it, but have not yet told us to what.

Lots of old houses here, yep. 1900 or older is a little bit more rare, but I haven't ever lived in a house that was built after 1930. All 1900's to 1920's.

One other thing that I personally have seen a lot of is old houses with additions. The one I live in was built in the 20's with an addition in the 90's -- the runner-up (the one we would've bought if we hadn't been able to get this one) was originally built in about 1880 and then had an addition built in the 20's. That one was a cool combination of styles I love, but it wasn't in great shape and had a totally scary basement (several interlocking chambers that got spookier and spookier... fully expected to see chained skeletons in the last one...)

Slappy, I was curious about the age of the condo from your pic in the "Dilemma" thread -- it's really nice!

Thanks Soz!

However, I've lost sleep waiting for your opinion on my drapes. That would be very big for me.

And you live in one of the most expensive areas of the second most expensive city in the country.
