Philomena Cunk

Philomena Cunk is a fictional character who is mind-boggingly stupid and ignorant, and who asks the stupidest questions of erudite individuals based on erroneous axioms and information.

Watching her induces embarrassment for her, and you incredulously ask yourself if anybody really could be that stupid. But is her character that far-fetched?

There is a Philomena Cunk sketch in which she asks an expert through which hole the spirit of soul leaves the body when it dies, the upper or the lower?

The question asked in this sketch is based on the assumption that there is a material soul or spirit that is the basis of our being. That's not that far off from what a lot of people believe.

We like to say that there are no stupid questions, but when your question is based on an ill-informed axiom, then what?

It doesn't induce embarassment over here.

It's how the assorted experts and pundits deal with her inane questioning that's funny.

She throws them curveballs all the time.

It's like Sasha Baron Cohen, nobody feels embarassed for Borat.

@coluber2001,
I place her in the ranks of Nathan Fielder, Tim Robinson, and other of the current trend of cringe comedians. Not offensive and also just not funny at all. So? Pretty pointless.

There is a segment of people who may not realize she's putting us on. They won't find her funny at all because they're not sure it's satire. Some people really wonder what happens to the "soul" after you die, and they literally believe in a material soul. She's just carries that assumed axiom to its absurd conclusion.

I loved the character she played in Ricky Gervais' After Life. I do think some of the lines are gold - not quite Norman Gunston level but amusing enough.

@coluber2001,
I spent some time watching her videos. She is a one of a kind funny lady.

@hingehead,
Example of Norman Gunston's interview technique. I don't think it necessarily appeals to the American palette (unless you're Sally Struthers) - like Cunk I suspect it appeals to more to Brits and Aussies.

@coluber2001,
Those people are idiots.

We shouldn't dumb down comedy for them.
