That brings up another thing....why is "overweight", "heavy", or "big" more acceptable than "fat"?

or another point

when someone gripes at a smoker, deep down they are hoping their jab at their habit is enough to make them quit. As if the hundreds of other jabs at someones smoking were not enough...

would calling a fat person on their eating habits really work? Or would it feed the insecurity behind most eating problems.. causing the person MORE harm and essentially driving them further down the void of an eating addiction?

Can anyone truly say that if they were to call someone on their eating habits they would do it with a pure intention?

me too.
if it makes you uncomfortable , people usually do something about it.

but, when y ou are uneducated about diet and food content.. it is hard.
Sometimes embarassment ( as with drug addicts ) is a good motivator..
then again, sometimes it isnt.

Haha...I remember in college I was hanging out in these girl's apartment, when one came back with a bunch of McDonalds. One girl who was a heavy hitter, after eating her quater pounder value meal sees there's another cheesburger left, and grabs it.

I look at her and say, "that's just disgusting." I could care less she was fat and may have thought I said it because of it. Same girl used to complain how she was overweight.

When you say "heavy hitter" do you mean she was overweight?

OK, taking away the fact that this girl used to complain about her weight, why did you find that disgusting?

If a man ate a big value meal, and took one more cheeseburger, would you have told him he was disgusting? Or, would you have either not given it a thought, or assumed he must still be hungry?

I went to a elementary school that only had hot lunches served once a week, ususally it was brown bagging from home.
All the girls would get a hot dog and chips, that's it.
The boys would all get at least 2 hotdogs, and would scarf up any leftovers after finishing that.
NO girl EVER asked for 2 hotdogs, even though that's probably what they would have eaten at home.
I remember finishing my lunch and just about going crazy because I was still so hungry, watching the boys eat their fill.........but it would have been far worse to ask for more food, and get told...."That's just disgusting"

back then, I didn't know I could say "F*ck You"
Which is what I hope that "heavy hitter" told you.

Anyway......

With smokers, I'll get a headache rightaway if I'm around them, so if I see one that's going to settle near me, I'll just move.......

With an overweight person, if they say anything at all like "I'm so big" and they are eating pork rinds, I have no problem with asking them about their food choice.

I don't think being overweight is always so much willpower as not. I stated before - I used to be able to eat anything I wanted and never gain an ounce. What willpower is that? I was just lucky to have a low metabolism.

Other people have to watch every bite they eat. They need more than average willpower. So many overweight people because of metabolism need to have greater willpower than me.

Honestly though - I don't verbally assault either smokers or overweight people. As long as it is not affecting me - it is their choice how they handle the situation. My husband is the opposite - he equally abuses both parties. And I honestly have not seen much of a difference on how people treat either party. I have seen some people rant and rave about overweight people while smoking away. They feel it is better to be slim and smoke than overweight.

Dragon... darling..
put down the damn burger.. U B 2 FAT,,

there.. did that help? Laughing

I agree with link..
it is up to each person how they handle their lives.
Squacking about not being educated isnt a vaild complaint anymore.
Internet, TV, Doctors, books, health educators and the like litter our society with healthy foods, vitamin break downs and 'fast food' content.

I didn't read all the responses so forgive me if someone already said any of this.

If I saw someone fat wolfing down enormous amounts of food, I probably would not comment or say something out loud, unless of course I thought they were going to explode. They are not harming me personally so what do I care of they eat themselves into an early grave? To be quite honest if America stopped selling supersize everything, taking out the fatty ingredients in foods that make them tasty and filling, replacing them with artificial junk, and slowed down a bit in the everyday stress levels of people by having normal working, learning, study hours so that people are not trying to be superhuman, we might actually find time to exercise more, enjoy food and in far less quantities, and have better healthier lives.

If I was in the vicinity of someone who lit up a cigarette around me, when I'm not smoking myself, I would probably move away (assuming it is a smoking area or outside). I have often waited for the train and someone would stand beside me and light up a smelly cigarette. I deliberately don't smoke in places where it would interfere with other peoples breathing enjoyment and if I am outside I step away from other people to light up. I would never deliberately blow smoke in someones face or direction - it's just plain rude.

Yes smoking is bad. Yes being fat is bad. If someone told me off for smoking, I would probably take it better than being told to put down that burger. The reason being, my smoking interferes with the breathing of someone nearby. I am guilty of being inconsiderate. But my eating a burger is not hurting anyone nearby (and I am not getting into medical issues or the high costs of health, that's outside of the scope of people feeling they have the right to berate you for what you are doing).

If that were to become accepted then where does it stop that we beat the **** out of each other verbally?

- Stop wearing that cross, I am a pagan and don't believe in Jesus (aargh, I'm burning, melting!)
- Wear a bag over your head, ugly people should not be allowed out in public ... and what's that? a pimple, you should be stoned to death!
- Help! Help! Fashion-police, that guy has a haircut from the 70s and it hasn't been washed in 2 years - cut his head off, he doesn't deserve to live!

Visually less than pleasing things don't really interfere with our rights (fat people) but smelly and noxious fumes that interfere with our breathing do (smoking). I'd be okay with asking someone to stop smoking so I can breathe rather than stop eating a burger so my eyes are not offended.

BINGO-
these super size portions are slowly becoming NORMAL size portions when they are supposed to be just extra big..

ouch..
another good point.

Chai Tea, by heavy hitter, I mean she was overweight.

And by "disgusting," I meant eating fries and two quarter pounders is pretty gross....in general. That food is nothing but greasy crap.

Supersizing is becoming normal portions. The problem is control. People tend to eat what's put in front of them. I remember seeing some "trick" weight watchers used, which is to use smaller plates, so the portions don't seem as small.

Quote:
Smoking parents a powerful influence, US study says

05 Sep 2005 20:00:45 GMT
Source: Reuters

CHICAGO, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Children as young as 2 years old are influenced by whether their parents smoke and drink alcohol, researchers said on Monday.

In a study of 2- to 6-year-olds, children who were told to "shop" for groceries for a hungry doll were four times more likely to choose cigarettes if their parents smoked and three times more likely to pick wine or beer if their parents drank at least once a month.

another good reason to ask people not to smoke around me.

1. it reduces my already problematic lung function.
2. there are often little kids around. I don't want them going out to buy cigarettes - even in play.

The plate thing is interesting. I often get lunch out - from the Greek or Vietnamese place downstairs from the office. I can't get the food onto a small plate, and it barely fits on a regular plate.

I've started serving myself on a small plate from the takeaway container, and then giving the leftovers - sometimes more than half of the food - to either Riz or Bru66. They're the department vacuum cleaners. Skinny as rails, and happy to inhale more food.

My opinion here on smoking versus someone being overweight has been touched on by a few people already. Heeven said it well.

Simply put, if someone's habit interferes with me in any way, I don't want it to happen around me. Smoking anything, whether it's cigarettes, pot, or a barbecue is an obvious one.

Habits that don't directly bother me, I can tolerate and ignore. If someone was chewing tobacco, I could care less, so long they weren't spitting it in my direction.

I don't think it would be up to me to comment on others' habits that don't directly affect me.
