Levees are definately "Not fixed". Whats needed is to build a series of coffer dams in front of the levves and rebuild them from bottom up. Spread foot pilings extended to great depths will be a start. I was part of a project to build a 90 story Trade Center in Kaoshiung Taiwan. We designed a huge grout curtain and spread piles for the subbasements . The grout curtain was extended around the building to about 150 ft deep and was about as big as the 17th st levee would need to be. The point is, Taiwan, just took on a challemge to build a big building in soft sediments in earthquake country. They had every contingency designed and it was pulled off quite nicely.
We have the technology. Im appalled that we left NAwlins go this long . We trusted in pumps and never did one politician listen to the engineers and the scientists in LSU or Tulane. (When I taught at Tulane, wed ave yearly disaster conferences in which "worst case scenarios were played out in computers"
The models predicted that the greatest disaster potentials were from the aging Pontchartrain side and from the failure to nourish the wetlands.
There is a series of experimental delta nourishment by passes along the Barataria area. These are being monitored by LSU and theyve been showing success. If we could get some of that stupid Hiway pork back from those bills that gave money to unpopulated areas of Alaska, then maybe we could begin without crappin the fiscally responsible budget. (HA)

It was hard to get his attention but eventually Rush had to come up for air (he has also been tending to Dennis "The Idiot" Hastert and Dickie Cheney, so as you can see he has been quite busy). Apparently Rush will be doing a one night only Broadway benefit show in October for Katrina, although he may not know what it's about. (Look folks, I am essentially conservative but Limbaugh is less intelligent than a horse's rear.) Well, to help you out I decided to send you to the latest Limbaugh lunacies.

NO is a ghost town. by the admission of all, a total loss, ruined, unihabitable for an unpredictable amount of time.

So what's the big goddam rush to pump that **** into everyone elses water? Are we in a contest to see if we can f*ck up the country worse than God? Is bush that confident in his holiness now?

Something that us common folk know and have questioned. Common sense is lost on those in power.

BBB
It's kind of a Hobson's Choice, isn't it? They need to get the water out fast so they can recover bodies. No time to consider any sort of treatment, if possible.

I don't mean to sound cold, but those bodies are already dead. the health and environmental consequenes of pumping without thinking are going to border on biblical.

What's the rush when it can mean the lives of many, many of the living if they do not do it right. They cannot bring life to the dead. Those are the cold hard facts.

It is six of one and half a dozen of the other. If it is allowed to sit and stew it will be a major source of disease. If they pump it it will be spread around but be diluted and ultimately break up. It seems to me that pumping is the lesser of two evils.

Bear, my instinct is the same as yours---until I put myself in the shoes of their loved ones who need to know what happened to them. It's like having a child disappear and never know what happened to them---until their murdered body is found.

As I said, Hobson's Choice.

Acquiunk, I agree. The return to "bioremediation" has recognized that nature, if assisted by nutrients and other things like warm saline water and oxygen, can most quickly breakdown , or at least adsorb most of the chemicals and all the bacteria. I guess the only thing is, I wouldnt eat any seafood from the gulf for a at least a few months of "filtering" time.
Oysters are like a living filter, they remove (and store) toxins from the water column and make it part of their bodymass. Id be most afraid of red tides because the excess fresh water is "friendly" to the critters that generate the toxins.

and I guess in this case, I almost sympathize with people in charge who have to make decisions of that type, objectively thinking of the good of the most and being forced to cast feelings aside. In this case, draining NO quickly to find a relatively and notice the key word is RELATIVELY small amount of bodies instead of taking their time now that the damage has been done rather than going full speed ahead and doing something that effects the water, environment and possibly health of millions of people.... well it just doesn't compute.

In any case, I said it before and I'll say it again, this rush to activity is designed for one thing and one thing only and that's to make bush look presidential so the repubs don't lose ground in 2006. Political damage control baby, plain and simple.
