A group is trying to rescue the pets of hurricane evacuatees and reunite them with their owners. They are sending busses into the flooded areas to find and bring the pets to their shelters.

Many of the people who refused to evacuate did so becaause they didn't want to abandon their pets in the flooding.

I'm so glad people are trying to help the animals too... Sad I can't imagine how awful it would have been to lose your pet on top of everything else.

The first time I cried about this tragedy was when I saw on the news a woman standing in front of her ruined house, crying hysterically not because of the house but because she had left her dog behind and now knew he must be dead.

I am still seeing the mental image of the little kid who almost vomited through crying because he had to leave his dog Snowball behind.

I'm glad someone is doing something for the animals.

Now someone is going to come along and yell and scream about people being more important than animals. If someone does then - this is a bit indelicate - get stuffed, the help for people is in place and growing.

Poor little creatures. So many will not have survived the devastation. I hope that the ones left ownerless will be adopted by new owners after rescue.

The Humane Society is asking for donations for their efforts to help the animals-- I'll be donating, I hope others will too...I wish I didn't live so far away and could help in some more direct way. Sad
I like goodfielder's comment... I wish people weren't so quick to say that animals should be last on the priority list in situations like this.
