"They have M-16s and they're locked and loaded," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said of 300 National Guard troops who landed in New Orleans fresh from duty in
Iraq. "These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will."

As Robert Duvall said to John Wayne in "True Grit:"

"I'd say that's bold talk from a one-eyed fat man."

Gov. Blanco is neither one-eyed nor a man, and I seriously doubt that she has the grit of a Rooster Cogburn, but the toughness of her talk does ring a bit hollow.

By not mobilizing the National Guard and State Police more quickly, she is, in part, to blame for the sad state of lawlessness in New Orleans.

Having said this, I hope that she is right.

When did we stop shooting looters on sight?
