I wonder what the pronunciation of "c" in Macintosh should be like. /s/, or /k/?

==============================

A Mackintosh is a form of waterproof raincoat, first sold

in 1824, made out of rubberized fabric. The Mackintosh is

named after its Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh: note

the added letter 'k' in the name of the garment.

Macintosh, also known as Mac for short, is a family of

personal computers manufactured by Apple Computer, Inc. of

Cupertino, California, USA.

"macintosh" is a variant spelling of "mackintosh" and both have the same pronunciation.

ORIGIN mid 19th cent.: named after Charles Macintosh (1766-1843), the Scottish inventor who originally patented the cloth.

Since my first Mac back in 1984, I thought that McIntosh was an apple variety, hence the "Apple Macintosh"...

Mac or Mc at the beginning of Scottish and Irish names is a Gaelic word meaning "son of", as in MacArthur or McAllan. (As the element that follows it is usually a proper name in itself, some people capitalise the first letter of that element as well, as I have done in these examples.) As it is in origin a separate word, the /c/ sound is not changed by the letter that follows it.

The equivalent in Welsh surnames is "Ap" (which is actually related to the Gaelic "Mac"). This has tended to get worn down into an initial P or B: thus "ap Evan" became Bevan, "ap Rhys" became Price or Preece, "ap Richard" became Pritchard.

Good stuff here.

McIntosh, MacIntosh, Mackintosh and Macintosh are all pronounced the same.
