9/1/05 - 6 pm mountain time:
Woo Hoo! The promised busses are finally arriving to evacuate people from the Superdome and, hopefully, the convention center, too.
I doubt there are enough buses to take out many thousands of people. Wish they were double deckers.
Sigh.

Great! Definitely ready for some good news.
Soz
Soz, sadly I doubt the busses will hold more than a 1,000 people. I'm glad the national guard is there to prevent riots by angry, scared and dissapointed people. I hope it goes well.
I have visions of the helicopter on top of the ambassador's building in Viet Nam as the pilot beats away desperate people trying to force themselves on board to escape.

Great news...... need more buses.

What about the school buses from the surrounding states? Give the school kids a bus holiday.
BBB
Do they have someplace for these buses to take the people? Things seem to be happening much, much too slowly.
Astrodome in Houson... not sure where else.
Just get the people out!
One kid did get a school bus and drive out 80 people. They were among the first to get to Houston.

I agree. But, it must be someplace where they will be cared for.
I am thinking that there is help and food/water to give them, but they need to be somewhere they can access it. Or where it can access them.
I heard on local news that only the people from the Superdome will be housed at the Astrodome here. Also, that a school bus full of people (perhaps the one littlek mentioned above?) was given food and water today but turned away.
Last nite it was reported that refugees from New Orleans who were already here but running short on funds were also being turned away with a list of other shelters available. I guess all the publicity about the Astrodome had their hopes up that they could stay there too.
It's been said that the maximum number of people the Astrodome can handle is 23,000.
god, using the word refugees to apply to Americans is so wrong.
I have followed all your posts about Katrina, but haven't posted because I've been too busy crying.
Oh, the horror of it all!
what reason could there be for accepting some and turning away others? Why not first-come, first-serve. And, while Houston is filling up, other venues can be readied.
This from U.S.A. Today online.....
The first refugees arrived Wednesday night on a school bus, apparently commandeered by a person who then picked up other evacuees who were stranded on the interstate. Another school bus arrived about two hours later, followed by the first commercial bus that was part of the emergency evacuation effort to transport Superdome residents to Houston. Four other buses arrived on Thursday.
Hungry and tired, the refugees ate scrambled eggs, biscuits and orange juice for breakfast, and then passed out on cots to get some much-needed rest.
"People are so happy to have a hot meal," said Margaret O'Brien Molina, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross. "Some of the folks haven't had a hot meal in days."
Besides the 500 buses expected from the Superdome, two airplanes and an Amtrak train were headed to Houston filled with refugees.
I'm getting angry:
Katrina: 1,000,000
Disaster Relief N/A. Results not available yet.

Yes, this is true and I'm beside myself!
I'm also in constant tears
