I'm working on comprehension strategies for readers and have come across both words. What's the distinction between them?

From Merriam-Webster

Main Entry: in·fer
Pronunciation: in-'f&r
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): in·ferred; in·fer·ring

Main Entry: in·fer·ence
Pronunciation: 'in-f(&-)r&n(t)s, -f&rn(t)s
Function: noun

adoannie, I don't believe there is such a word as inferencing.
