From what I've read over the years about the NOPD (corruption is legendary), wouldn't surprise me if they're not some of the ones doing some of the looting.

Unless things have changed a lot since 1968 when I lived there, the city of New Orleans has pretty much been forgotten by civilization.

Never have I seen anywhere in the country with more slums and poverty than New Orleans. Pure trash. My god this morning I heard about snakes and rats floating around in the water. Looters, where are they going to take the stuff? Everything is flooded!

If they didn't do some good looting the day before yesterday they are out of luck brother!

I could easily have shot looters in South Central Los Angles when they were looting over Rodney King because they were dry and they had places to put the stuff they were stealing but those poor folks in New Orleans? No way should they be shot. I say god have mercy on all those poor people in New Orleans whether they be looters or not. It is a downright awful place to be when it is dry let alone flooded.

I say, let 'em loot all they want. Who cares? The place is basically destroyed anyways, so what's the difference?

So far, I think it's only a police officer that's been shot (by an armed looter). In the leg, from what I heard. He's expected to make a full recovery.

I think a merchant has every right to protect his property and if a gun is necessary, so be it.

If people are "looting" food, there is no point is policing that since the food would go bad anyway. Why not let them take whatever they can to survive?

I no longer watch television news much for obvious reasons that many people don't (all crap) but providing not too many people were relatedly killed this could be a blessing: Flood rather than fire destroyed the dam place!

Billions in federal money are going to be required to rebuild the city of New Orleans, make no mistake about that because most of the people in New Orleans are poor people. It will be good to see a new city built after the federal government has ignored New Orleans these many years.

Oh we know about Louis Armstrong, French Quarter, floozie women, the color and all but that didn't do much at all for all the poor citizens that lives there. Nothing at all as a matter of fact.

The flood is a blessing in disguise is what it be.

Yes, I'm hearing about the jewelry stores and such now. Also the alligators and snakes. Horrifying. Desparation and the will to survive can drive even the most pious one to madness. May God have mercy on their souls.

i think i am woiyo on the food. if they are looting that, its going to go bad anyway, so what's the big deal. i do however have issue with the looting of jewelry stores and department stores. i was watching fox and the guy reporting said something along the lines of 4 teenagers running up to him with about 6 pairs of new sneakers each, asking where and how to get to the superdome so they could get on the buses out-after of course they looted the you know what out some foot locker...

i feel horribly for those in new orleans as well. however, shooting whether it be on the part of the police or the looters is definitely not the answer. not quite sure i know what the answer is, but that is why i am not in law enforcement...

Desparate times calls for desparate measures... looting food and water is one thing for survivial but how is a dvd player or a plasma tv going to help you survive?

Armaggedon is purported to be quite exciting, but the aftermath is likely to be a tad anticlimatic. One might need a good TV for that part.

Well, we are getting our wish, they are shooting the looters.

Quote:
Superdome Evacuation Halted Amid Gunfire

The evacuation of the Superdome was suspended Thursday after shots were reported fired at a military helicopter and arson fires broke out outside the arena. No injuries were immediately reported.

The scene at the Superdome became increasingly chaotic, with thousands of people rushing from nearby hotels and other buildings, hoping to climb onto the buses taking evacuees from the arena, officials said. Paramedics became increasingly alarmed by the sight of people with guns.

Richard Zeuschlag, chief of the ambulance service that was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the Superdome, said it was suspending operations "until they gain control of the Superdome."

Shots were fired at a military helicopter over the Superdome before daybreak, he said.

He said the National Guard told him that it was sending 100 military police officers to restore order.

"That's not enough," said Zeuschlag, whose Acadian Ambulance is based in Lafayette. "We need a thousand."

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Authorities suspended an evacuation of New Orleans on Thursday after a reported shooting at a military helicopter and President Bush urged "zero tolerance" for lawlessness in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The helicopter incident was just part of the chaos that prompted New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin to order police to drop rescue operations to fight looting and other crime that gripped the city. A National Guard soldier was shot and wounded on Wednesday in the Superdome arena housing thousands of refugees in increasingly squalid conditions.

"This recovery will take years," Bush said an address from the White House Rose Garden. "A lot of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been completely destroyed. There's going to be a lot of rebuilding done. But there is good news...I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance! Haha...I'm rich, biatch!"

I think they should evacuate but leave the looters there maybe.

Then they should spray the area with disinfectant and write it off.

? "If you have READ reports regarding looting

? you would have SEEN that much. . . hard goods.

Which is the source of your comment? Newspapers and magazines? Or television?

In any case, you read what a reporter reports and you "see" what the TV editors want you to see.

It doesn't make sense to me, either. Why would looters shoot at a helicopter that's presumably there for rescue purposes?

Because when stress reaches the breaking point, so does any form of rationality, extreme fear and desperation will reduce any man to random irrational acts basically it's a "do something even if it's wrong" mentality.

I don't know where you get your news from. But they are looting everything that is not nailed down. Unfortunately there are those who do it whenever the opportunity arises. Regarding reporting, are you trying to sell the premise that the looting is a fabrication of the news media?
