In countless movies' somebody clamors into a car on the passenger's side, then shuffles into the driver's seat. Why don't they just get in on the driver's side in the first place?

Simple answer is probably lazy film editing. The driver’s side may be on the traffic side. It might be safer to enter on passenger side.

@edgarblythe,
Maybe they're not used to your American cars putting the steering wheel in the wrong side.

When I was driving a hire car in Italy I did it all the time.

@izzythepush,
When my husband was driving in the UK, he accidentally turned on the wipers instead of the indicators. All. The. Time.

@Mame,
I had the same problem or issue in New Zealand and Scotland when I rented vehicles. Also, was in fear of my life whilst driving in Scotland due to the narrow roads and massively tall hedges. I never knew when and if a car or truck was approaching. I had drive with my windows open and music off. I wondered how the hell cyclists could survive there.

@Ragman,
Right? We were heading to Kelston, near Bath, and we turned the GPS on. We were directed through miles of farmers' fields bordered by hedges. The funny thing was that it would say, Turn Left, and there was nowhere to go but Left... but it gave the hedgerow path a name (Turn Left on Mayflower)... we thought it was hilarious.

@Mame,
I still do that, it's not a country thing, some cars over here have them one side others the other side.

I've driven both and I still do it even though my I've been driving my current vehicle for over ten years.

You would have a problem trying to get in my car and slide to the other side. The bucket seats and the rest of the design makes it a challenge.

@izzythepush,
That's funny. Here they're always on the same side... at least all the cars I've driven...Indicators on the left, wipers on the right. Did that American woman who claimed diplomatic immunity when she ran over and killed that cyclist ever get her day in court? It's a bit daunting, scary, even, to reverse all your driving habits but to flee the scene is reprehensible.

@Ragman,
They probably don't go down farmers' hedge paths. We only did because we were directed to by the GPS. After 40 minutes of that, we finally reached our inn and I asked the owner where Bath was. He pointed down the road and said one mile then turn right and you're there Smile That was exhausting after a 9 hr flight plus airport time on both ends and hubby's first time driving in the UK. I'm glad I thought to fly into Gatwick instead of Heathrow.

@Mame,
She appeared via video link.

We still don't know if she'll appear for sentencing.

If you're driving to the West Country you're better off going to Heathrow, it's closer to the M4.

@izzythepush,
What irks me is while next in the queue the person being served then starts rummaging through their handbag to get their purse, then shuffles through numerous cards to get to their bank card to then pay. How come they couldn't have had that already in hand to directly pay. Shocked

@Bubbles66,
I had one of them in Lidl.

I paid quickly and then had to wait while they slouched from one side to the other making it impossible to pass until I got outside.

@Bubbles66,
What irks me is that as soon as people enter a parking lot, they become brain-dead. Uh... where am I going? Can I go slower than 1 mph and put on the wrong indicator?

Supermarkets are often the bane of my existence. I can’t how many times the following occurs:
- people outright block the aisles
- run their carts into your feet, ankles or toes
- gab away on their phones and broadcast (usually TMI) for the world to hear
- chat with cashier or fiddle for payment options at the front of the line
