I don't think anything about the Arabic language. Should I start thinking about it?

Well, its difficulty probably depends on what your native language is. I find that, for me (native English speaker) it is difficult to pronounce some of the sounds just because I never have. It requires some parts of your voice and throat that you don't normally use. Also, it can be difficult to learn to read and write it simply because the letters are different. The same would probably be true for Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and others.

But, I like it anyway and would like to learn to speak it better.

Arabic interests me - to the extent that it does intellectually, for reasons of history I'd like to know, perhaps deep history - but I am unlikely to understand all past history myself.

Me... as myself, I am interested in the surface of arabic, the graphic movement of the typed or written letters. Not for their symbolism, per se, except as it might be useful to understand how the language flows.

I can only imagine how my particular interest could annoy people.

Thank you, Andrei. I will note them. Alas, foreign travellers don't always meet the people they would be interested to talk to. How about 'No, I don't want to buy a ****** carpet!"?

Clary -- 'No' is 'la'. I'm not sure what the word for carpet is. Safinaz can probably help you. A useful word is 'yallah!, which basiclly means 'go away.' Smile

well clary..'no, I don't want to buy a carpet'.
the sentense in Arabic is:
"la, la uridu an ashtariya zarbiyyah".
of course it is the Classical Arabic. I mean the Formal. Smile

Yeah, I forgot about 'imshi' or just 'imsh' as it's sometimes pronounced. I always thought 'yallah' and 'imshi' were kind of synonimous. I'm learning much from you.
