Love him or hate him, David Lange was one of the cleverest, wittiest, most erudite and distinctive politicians ever to grace the world stage.

He died, after some years of great suffering from an incurable plasma disorder, amyloidosis, on 13th August.

Larger than life - at least as clever as his formidably smart "big brother" rivals from the Australian left(ish), Gough Whitlam and Paul Keating, and famed for making wee New Zealand's mark on the world map (most noteably by making NZ a nuclear free zone, and hence not allowing ANY American warships into NZ harbours, since the USA has a policy of not saying which of its ships are nuclear powered - an action which brought down America's wrath, and even pissed off Australia, because of the threat it created to the ANZUS treaty, and probably cos our left was way wussier on the issue) he is a great loss to the world of politics - though he had retired some years ago.

And he defeated the egregiously awful NZ troglodyte and street-fighter smart buffoon, "Piggy" Muldoon. Yay!!!!

A Goliath sized New Zealand David. I'm gonna miss you - warts, controversy and all.

May the wind be ever at your back, David.

Personal recollection from Scoop - a NZ news service:

A sad loss indeed.

Much is alleged about Lange's so-called anti-Americanism. I don't think he was, I think something like that would have been beneath him, he was too intelligent to think that way.

But around the time he was in power there was much anti-Americanism in NZ.

I remember walking along Lambton Quay in Wellington (I really like Wellington) one afternoon, wearing a Los Angeles Rams warmup jacket minding my own business when a young woman walked right up to me, hawked and spat right at my foot just missing my right Reebok. She then left before I could respond. My then wife told me "she thinks you're a Yank!" I told her "keep quiet, if she hears our Aussie accents she'll come back and do it again!"

Loved him, Deb. Very Happy He was one of the few (perhaps the only politician?) who could be spot on in his utterances, yet make one laugh out loud at the same time. And I like his politics, too. (apart from the GST & economic rationalist stuff). There was something very brave & right about the way he stood up to the US. And to France, over the Rainbow Warrior incident. Bravo NZ, Bravo David Lange! The mouse that roared! A class act. Very Happy

Looked at the Scoop link I gave?

It is a great snapshot of him.

Remember the contradictions? The "Rogernomics" vs the other stuff?

Remember the horrors of Piggy?

There is a very interesting little piece in one of Hoft's little outbursts of invective against me - (well, this is one of the occasions when it was against me - many are thus favoured!) where she appears to praise Piggy for his racism - and says some very interesting things about what he was hoping to do...

I will see if I can find it - here we go - this is the full quote, if you want to read it:

But this is the relevant piece:

May I add in that connection - since you seem to be posting from Australia - that I had the honor of working with the late New Zealand Prime Minister Robert Muldoon and supported (to the infinitesimal degree that my then position in DC afforded) his motion to unite NZ with AU in order to avoid having the NZ population overwhelmed by primitive savages?

One can only assume the "ignorant savages" are the Maoris and Samoans?

Lovely fella, Piggy, eh?
