Does anyone believe the image on the shroud is Jesus Christ or an art work of Leonardo Da Vinci?
The image does resemble Da Vinci

"Knowledge itself is power"
I don't have the citation handy, but they did some scientific dating of it, and all authorities agreed that it originated in the 13th century, making it a fake. This is a dead issue.
And if it dates to the thirteenth century, Leonardo was not yet even a gleem in his daddy's eye . . .
They could only date the shroud but they couldn't date the image on the shroud.
so you are saying that the shroud could be only from the 13th century but the image may be thousands of years older Aurelius??
I believe he's still trying to put Leonardo in as a pinch hitter . . .
You have a point there shewolfnm. Since they can't date the image, it can be older.
I wasnt making a point, i was asking if that is what you were getting at?

No, the image would have to be younger. If the shroud itself dates only to the 13th century, the image on it cannot be older.
The C14 dating was explained away by believers, saying that the scientists mistakenly tested fibres from a part of the shroud that had been patched in the Middle Ages (leaving open the possibility that the shroud itself is much older).
The scientists testing the shroud also found that the blood stains on the shroud were not made by blood but by a colouring agent containing ironoxide. That part hasn't been explained away, yet.
This thread reminds me of the corny dipiction of how the shroud came about in 'The Passion of Christ'.
Does anyone remember that bit in the film when Jesus mopped his face with a cloth, someone else picked it up, held it up and on it was waht looked like a smiley face!!

And that in turn reminds me of the "Have a Nice Day" scene in Forrest Gump!
I think the scene in the movie (which I did not see) would refer to St. Veronica. She is said to have given Jesus her veil to wipe away his sweat and blood. When it was returned to her, his image was on the cloth. There are various religious paintings that illustrate the scene.
One thing does get me.
How did forger know the way cruxifation(sp) worked eg right way nails should go in?
There is nothing mysterious about execution by crucifixion. It remained a common way to kill criminals well into the middle ages. The artist could even have witnessed such a killing.
I always feel if people want to believe in such things they are welcome to do so. Personally, when I look at the shroud I think "early medieval artist's rendering". The guy probably made a tidy sum selling to some rich believers.
Thanks for the explanion,GREENWITCH
