Since July 2021, my ex and I have shared joint custody of our son. My 10-year-old son has lived with me his entire life, until July 2021, when he was sent to live with his father due to issues with my son missing school during covid. My son comes home on weekends to see me, and every time he leaves, he starts crying and tells me he doesn't want to go to his father's house because he hates it there. I tell him to tell his father, and he says his father will hit him. I'm at a loss for what to do about this. Should I hire a counselor to talk to my son, or should I get a lawyer?

@gl367,
Stop hesitating and get a lawyer.

@gl367,
Perhaps a facile response does no merit here. The 'badness' of the father could be genuine, or doublespeak for the child not wanting to be disciplined to go to school. This could very well go either way, but with only one parent speaking to me, I am lost as to the correct response. Madam, just be aware that there might (or, granted, might not) be another page to this story. - David Lyga

@jespah,
And maybe contact Child Services? Threats of violence are serious.
