That's because Howard has taken the Liberal Party, created as a party of liberal economic ideas but reasonably conservative social ideas and has shifted it to the Right hard as he could. It is now a reactionary political party and doesn't deserve to be identified as anything but reactionary. The label it wears is a misnomer.
