on my fathers grave before his hebew name is a p or f yud gimel. can someone tell what this means.

The yod (yud in your question) is not only a y sound but can also be a vowel, oh or ay, if I recall correctly. Maybe just the ay sound. Are you sure it's a gimel and not a nun? They can look similar.

Is it a final peh or a regular peh? The final peh can look like a final kaf.

ג יפ <-- this is peh yod gimel (assuming you can see it, you'll need to have the Hebrew language pack installed on your computer). Is this what you saw?
