England are playing Italy in the European Cup final tomorrow. Various footballing anthems have featured, most noticeably Three Lions by The Lightening Seeds and Baddiel and Skinner.

It has now shot up the singles charts.

Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline has had a resurgence too. It’s long been a popular sing along at sporting events. It has a rising chorus and even if the listener doesn’t know what it is at the beginning they do by the time the chorus came along.

The Wembley DJ put it on after the win over Germany and the crowd went wild.

Frank Skinner was in the crowd and he said they beat Germany only to lose to Neil Diamond in half time.

Anyway, if anyone is going to England this Summer or somewhere with a lot of English tourists expect to hear Neil Diamond, you may even be asked to join in a bit of a sing song.

There’s a BBC article on the songs’ success. I think Boston was mentioned, there’s a few stadiums connected to it because it’s such a good singalong song.

And it’s nonpartisan, everybody can sing along.

Two of my sons are in the marching band at the big state university here. They went to an away game at a university where the home band was banned from playing Sweet Caroline due to some lyrics the home crowd invented. Of course that ban did not apply to visitors so our band played it and the crowd went wild singing their favorite lyrics.

People, especially sports crowds, often make up their own lyrics.

Another popular song quite surprisingly is by Atomic Kitten.

You’re the One is very popular.

I think it’s supposed to reference England manager Gareth Southgate, (obviously not originally, he wasn’t manager when it first came out.)

The Queen has just sent a message of support to the England team.

And she’s not the only one. Tom Cruise got in touch yesterday evening. He’s currently over here filming the next Mission Impossible movie.

Still, first major final since 1966 and Germany beaten in the knockouts.
