"stay back" and "make it 50 yards and return"

Aided by a tail wind, we paddle lazily in the shadow of gigantic ponderosa pines and red firs en route to Emerald Bay one mile north. The air is so clear I can distinguish individual trees on Mt. Rose 26 miles away. Near the shore, foot-long pine cones hang like lanterns from the dead branches of an ancient sugar pine, its needles dry and brown, the trunk gray-silver. Seeing these sights up close ?- much closer than a motorboat would dare, given all the submerged boulders ?- is why we paddle.

Eagle Point protrudes from the southern lip of Emerald Bay, and we don't like what we see: 40 mph gusts and whitecaps streaming out of the bay. Kingman paddles hard as Liebl and I stay back. He makes it 50 yards, then returns.

My question is: Does "stay back" mean to stay somewhere outside the kayak and wait Kingman to come back or just stay on the kayak with nothing to do and go and return together with Kingman?

And the second question is what does it mean by saying "make it 50 yards, and return"? Does Kingman go as close to shore as 50 yards and come back to where he is minutes before?

Good morning, translatorcz,

It would appear that there were three people paddling about in single kayaks like these {Click Here}.

"Stay back" means two, (Liebl and I), remained where they were and watched the fellow named Kingman struggle against the wind and large waves. He is able to go 50 yards (towards the shore? That's not clear.) before giving up and returning to the other two kayakers.

It's a very nice scene.

Joe

For some reason, I can't access the link you give me. And our time zone is not the same, so when I'm reading your reply, and posting mine, for me, it's in the evening. Hehe. Good evening. By the way, your information is very vital. Thank you.
