Southern Poverty Law Center - why "poverty"?

I'm not American and I have a question. There is a organisation named Southern Poverty Law Center and it monitors hate groups and condemns racism. But why "poverty" in its name? We all know meaning of word "poverty", but why this organisation has name referring to this social phenomenon?

@goodguy123,
They grew out of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and the lawyers who founded the organization went to court to fight racism and the imbalances in litigation and other aspects of the law arising from the poverty of their prospective clients.

True. They are now no more than a hate group.

@coldjoint,
Yes, one of their main positions is the hanging of all blacks. Aren't you a member?

Actually... it makes perfect sense.

If you get poor White people (who are also getting screwed) to work work together with Black people to topple the injust system, you start to get results.

There is a bit more history here...

In the American South, there were a fair amount of White people living in poverty. The colloquial term for them is "White trash". They were treated pretty badly by the White upper class, but the fact that they were White (and that Black people were treated worse) kept them in line.

If you want to deal with the basic injustice of the social system, providing help to White poor people makes a lot of sense.

You should see the SPLC's offshore bank accounts. That will give you an idea of who they are helping.

@coldjoint,
They only have half the money that Trump supposedly has. And they try to help people while Trump screws everyone he can. Right now that encompasses 330 million people.

The people that pay them. They spread more hate and disinformation than any "Hate group" they have on their ridiculous list. This how Communism works and you seem just fine with it.
