The Hackman movie you're thinking of is The French Connection, I believe, Osso.

Just a point of reference, assuming the Freightliner in question was a full sized Class 8 road tractor, with a typical 50' closed-van trailer, the available load capacity would be in the neighborhood of 25 tons. Baled, in the fashion of hay, you could prolly get just about that much pot into the trailer, given the cubic volume of the typical trailer.

53 foot is the standard

Laughing Good nit-picking, ehBeth Laughing

To continue in the nit-picky vein - exterior wall thickness, interior sheathing, tiedown rails, scuff plates, front corner radius, and door thickness all combine to reduce the available interior space somewhat from the nominal 53' exterior length, though, admittedly, not by 3' - more like 6" to 10", depending on configuration. If you had an exactly-measured 53' long product to ship, it wouldn't fit in a typical 53' trailer.

For the latest in news and information on the North American road trailer industry, you can't do better than Trailer Body Builders. and for the overall picture, there's Over The Road Magazine.
