hi there
-does anybody know the rules for using passato remoto?
Depends on the zone you live.
In the North, passato remoto is used mostly in literature. In normal talk, you have top be talking about several years ago... better if it's the Roman Empire to the XIX Century.
In the Center, passato remoto is used when events are a week old or more, aproximately.
In the South, passato remoto is used almost always.
So the boundary of passato prossimo/ passato remoto moves as you travel north. Passato remoto is a second ago in Sicily, eons ago in the North of Lombardy (unless it's literature).
