Many American tabloids publish articles covering the plans of American strategists to bring into open space advanced military equipment like that described in space fiction and valued at enormous sum of money. Don't they have any other ideas of what to spend money on? We've already got inoperative National Missile Defense (NMD) ABM system that needs annual multimillion investments taken from the Americans as taxes.
Indeed, during the Cold War there were several US defensive systems (DEW Line, SAGE, Nike-Zeus) and each of them got obsolete before completing. The huge amount of tax dollars went through fingers. As far as I know, the US has been spending some four billion dollars on the ABM system over the past few years. And all in vain, I see.

In this respect I don't think it makes any sense to start any other utopian projects of Star Wars. We just don't need it and it going to be much more costly than the ill-fated defensive systems.
