Forgive me for posting this a few days late, work has kept me very busy.
Courage
Not a word we use very much these days. It seems as if the word has gone somewhat out of style for its true meaning. We ignore many of the true displays of courage and hang the word on people it should't apply to.
In my lifetime I have had the honor of meeting several people to whom the word truly applies.
I have shaken hands with two Medal of Honor recipients.
I met 3 of the original Mercury and Gemini astronauts (From a time when men strapped bombs to their backsides and took a ride to outer space.)
I watched a firefighter friend of mine run into a burning and collapsing building to get a man out before he died.
These were all men of courage and I am better for having met them.
But 16 years and 3 days ago I saw a man who defined that quality for all time.
I don't know his name, I don't guess I ever will, but it isn't important that I do.
I never had the honor of meeting him, although I hope that in this world or the next I get to tell him of my respect for him.
Although he was not of my faith, I hope he will understand that I light a candle for him at Mass whenever I go.
I hope the world will always remember the courage of this man...
