scantily clad?

I looked up scantily clad in all Dictionaries, couldn't find it. My mother thinks it means half naked.

What do you believe scantily clad means?

Scant means little. Scantily clad means wearing little. And i don't for a moment believe you didn't know that . . . i suspect you just wanted to introduce such a topic for the titilation value . . .

Scantily clad? Not necessarily half-naked, but given the wispy, unconcealing nature of the garments....

I'm with Set. I think the underlying motive of this thread was scantily clad.

So, are you saying there are scatily clad clothes, or is it wearing very little clothing?

I read some news report that Prince William perferred scantily clad girls. Does that mean girls that wear very little clothing?

The girls wear either very little clothing or clothing cut to conceal very little.

Well, strictly speaking it would mean naked from the waist up, or the waist down. However, it is my experience that it is used as hyperbole, signifying that in the opinion of the person using the expression, the object of their condemnation is not decently dressed. For example, an old man or woman might see a young woman in a halter top and short shorts and comment: "Those darn kids run around half-naked these days."

Are you a speaker of the American language? I don't ask that to be rude, but because a speaker of the American language should understand that in most contexts, adding "about" is simply using an intensifier. For example, one might become disgusted by something and say: "That's all i can stand." To intensify the meaning, to express the sentiment more strongly, one might say: "That's about all i can stand." In the context of hyperbole which i mentioned before, saying "about half naked" would still be an exageration, but it would now have been made a stronger statement. Do you refer to a specific something you have read?

There's no such word as titilation.

However there's this;

tit·il·late (ttl-t)
v. tit·il·lat·ed, tit·il·lat·ing, tit·il·lates
v. tr.
To stimulate by touching lightly; tickle.
To excite (another) pleasurably, superficially or erotically.

v. intr.
To excite another, especially in a superficial, pleasurable manner: "Once you decide to titillate instead of illuminate... you create a climate of expectation that requires a higher and higher level of intensity" (Bill Moyers).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Latin ttillre, ttillt-, to tickle.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
titil·later n.
titil·lating·ly adv.
titil·lation n.
titil·lative adj.

titillation

n 1: a tingling feeling of excitement (as from teasing or tickling) 2: an agreeable arousal 3: the act of tickling [syn: tickle, tickling]
