Scarborough calls Mitch McConnell 'Moscow Mitch,' says lack of action on Russian meddling is 'un-American'

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough on Friday lashed out at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling him "Moscow Mitch" over his inaction on legislation to address Russian election interference.

Scarborough made the comments about the Kentucky Republican during a segment on "Morning Joe" after McConnell blocked two election security measures. The hashtag #MoscowMitch quickly began trending on Twitter following his comments.

Scarborough, a former GOP lawmaker, called McConnell's actions "un-American."

"How can Moscow Mitch so willingly turn a blind eye not only this year to what his Republican chairman of the Intel Committee is saying, to what Robert Mueller is saying, to what the FBI director is saying, to what the DNI [director of national intelligence] is saying, to what the CIA is saying, to what the United States military intel community is saying," Scarborough asked.

"How can Moscow Mitch keep denying that [Russian President] Vladimir Putin continues to try to subvert American democracy?"

Scarborough accused McConnell of "aiding and abetting Vladimir Putin's ongoing attempts to subvert American democracy" and said it was "un-American" for McConnell to block the Senate from taking up election security legislation.

The nickname took off on social media, with more than 65,000 tweets mentioning the nickname on social media as of Friday morning.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Thursday tried to get consent to pass a House bill that requires the use of paper ballots and includes funding for the Election Assistance Commission. It passed the House 225-184, with one Republican voting for it.

But McConnell objected to the bill and accused Schumer of pushing "partisan legislation."

Under the Senate's rules, any one senator can request consent to pass a bill, but any one senator can object.

The Senate majority leader then objected when Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) asked for consent to pass legislation that would require candidates, campaign officials and their family members to notify the FBI of assistance offers from foreign governments.

McConnell's block came after former special counsel Robert Mueller warned about continued Russian interference in U.S. elections during his Wednesday congressional hearings.

"We are expecting them to do it again during the next campaign," Mueller said.

Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday also released its long-awaited bipartisan report on Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Among the key findings of the report, the committee writes that "the Russian government directed extensive activity, beginning in at least 2014 and carrying into at least 2017, against U.S. election infrastructure at the state and local level."

The report also assessed that all 50 states were targeted in 2016 in some way.

@Real Music,
I think Scarborough is right. Mitch might like it while he thinks the Russians are helping the Republicans, he will regret it immensely when they turn against him....and they will turn against him.

As long as the republican party continue to kiss Vladimir Putin's ass, Russia will continue to help and support the republican party.

Republican President Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave.

Republican President Ronald Reagan would be ashamed of what his republican party has become.

I am not a fan of either Ronald Reagan or the republican party.

@Real Music,
Russia is the penultimate puppet master. They will assist the Republicans as long as they find it to their advantage, then they will decimate them for something else. They (repubs) should know this, and they may know it but are so arrogant they think they can control them. It's a dangerous game they are playing, and for all the patriotic verbiage they proclaim, they will lead this country into chaos just to pack the Supreme Court.

@glitterbag,
1. 'Moscow' Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump, and the republican party are all willing puppets of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

2. When Vladimir Putin command any of them to jump, they all reply by saying: How high?

3. If 'Moscow' Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump, and the republican party had their way, they would probably change the United States of America to the United States of Russia.

I love the implication that if elections are more secure it will favor the Democrats.

@hightor,
And what exactly is being done to further secure future elections. Tulsi has a good proposal, other than that, are there any actual efforts.

AOC HUMILIATES Mitch McConnell.

Moscow Mitch got his feelings hurt. Adrienne Lawrence, Maytha Alhassen, and Ana Kasparian, hosts of
The Young Turks, break it down.

"Last week, McConnell blocked a bill passed by the House that would have authorized $775 million to help
protect state election systems from Russian hacking and other threats. That action prompted critics to
dub him Moscow Mitch.”

AOC chewed out Mitch McConnell for comparing accusations against him to McCarthyism. The reality, however, is that whenever you're goading toward punitive action by taunting people for being 'un-American' etc., it really is a fascist tactic comparable to McCarthyism or any kind of witch hunting.

AOC used the predictable tactic of denying the similarity by focusing on the specific details of McCarthyism as being about communism and not some other 'witchcraft.' It's getting really old when people are either too dumb or too smart to grasp analogical comparisons at the level of relevance with which they are meant. E.g. it's irritating to have someone say that beating someone with a baseball bat is like beating them with a club, and then listen to a response about how clubs are different from baseball bats.

I still don't see what Russians did to help the election that constituted, 'meddling.' Didn't they just make a bunch of political propaganda and distribute it via internet? How is that meddling if voters are critical-thinkers with the capacity to discern good information from bad information?

It seems like what the critics of Russian election propaganda are saying is that US voters are moronic sheep that have to be protected from foreign shepherds so that only the US media can lead them mindlessly with home-grown propaganda.

That is a bizarre, anti-democratic sentiment, isn't it?

@hightor,
Well, let’s think this out for a moment: Trump cheated before in the previous election, and then flaunted his cheating using Russian interference. What are the odds that he’ll do it again in this coming election? I’d take that bet any day.

In this coming election there’ll be a sizable amount of potential voters (former felons) who, if they vote, are more likely to vote Democrat. In many states, the laws have been rescinded that prohibits felons who will have served their time. After their release, the can register to vote. If 10-15% of them vote, it’s possible for it to be a much tighter race than it was in 2016.

LOL: "Moscow Mitch" is Taking Over McConnell's Life.

The moniker "Moscow Mitch" is increasingly taking over Republican
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's life, and he really doesn't like it.

It’s so helpful that the Mitch McConnell is so horrified by name-calling. I think his most recent moniker #MassacreMitch might get his shriveled old ass out of the doorway so gun safety laws can get through.

@Lash,
Make g fun of him covers up he and his wife Elaine shoe's government mechanisms. He and she have a big interest in z large shipping company that does business largely with tube mainland Chinese government. She heads the government agency that controls shipping. Another case of republicans getting richer with government collusion. Trump government as usual.

@roger,
Google mcConell and his wife. Trump selected her as head of a government agency that rules shipping. He and her have a share of a shipping company owned by her daddy that does 70% of their business with main land communist china. Wonder why he doesn't want to mess with Russian or Chinese interference with our government.
