Rumsfeld Laments Global Reach of War News

By DAVID B. CARUSO, Associated Press Writer
Thu May 26, 7:21 AM ET

PHILADELPHIA - One of the military's new wartime challenges is dealing with global media that can instantly spread around the world information that may be false or damaging to U.S. interests, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Wednesday.

The United States needs to respond to anti-American messages with greater agility and speed if it is to win the ideological struggle with Islamic extremists, Rumsfeld said in a speech to members of the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia.

"We'll need to develop considerably more sophisticated ways of using these new means of communication that are now available to reach the many and diverse audiences," he said.

Rumsfeld didn't delve deeply into specifics in his brief talk with members of the civic group. But in the recent past, news outlets have broadcast messages from terrorist groups, or reported stories that have fueled rage against Americans in the Muslim world.

"This is really the first war in history that is being conducted in an era of multiple global satellite television networks, 24-hour news outlets with live coverage of terrorist attacks, disasters and combat operations," Rumsfeld said.

He said U.S. officials must also deal with "a global Internet with universal access and no inhibitions, e-mail, cell phones, digital cameras wielded by anyone and everyone" and "a seemingly casual disregard for the protection of classified information, resulting in a near continuous hemorrhage of classified documents, to the detriment of the country."

Google searches for, finds top level execs in D.C.

Google is beefing up its Washington-area presence by adding a couple of big names to its local team.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine giant has hired Dan Senor as vice president of global communications and strategy. Senor was the chief spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and senior adviser to U.S. Ambassador Paul Bremer.

In mid-April, Google hired Alan Davidson from the D.C.-based Center for Democracy & Technology, which advocates for constitutional rights in digital media. The company is also looking to hire a local manager of sales to Defense Department agencies. Some support staff also are needed.

The Washington hires represent a more sophisticated approach for Google on public policy and government contracts...

Now you won't be able to google and get anything except what the White house ( os more accurately their masters) dictates is to be read...a logical step in the destruction of the USA.

Google is owned by two kids who hang out at the same bars I used to. Mountain View really is the center of Silicon Valley and the technology universe. It's also a very liberal area.

BTW, remember Total Information Awareness?

Here is how John Markoff of the New York Times describes the capability of the TIA program:

"...it will provide intelligence analysts and law enforcement officials with instant access to information from Internet mail and calling records to credit card and banking transactions and travel documents, without a search warrant. Historically, military and intelligence agencies have not been permitted to spy on Americans without extraordinary legal authorization. But Admiral Poindexter, the former national security adviser in the Reagan administration, has argued that the government needs broad new powers to process, store and mine billions of minute details of electronic life in the United States. Admiral Poindexter, who has described the plan in public documents and speeches but declined to be interviewed, has said that the government needs to 'break down the stovepipes' that separate commercial and government databases, allowing teams of intelligence agency analysts to hunt for hidden patterns of activity with powerful computers."

Just because we don't hear about it anymore doesn't mean it isn't happen behind the scenes.

"Neo-Conservative Takes Over GOOGLE!'"

This is a very misleading statement. A more realistic remark would be to say that Google has finally gotten around to hiring lobbists.

They weren't "taken over", they just want more ins in Washington because their ambitions have expanded.

It's not uncommon in business and most knowlegable folk simply remarked "it's about time".

This news is only as political as the realization of the need for lobbists in the corporate world is.

Edit: this move should result in more sales to governmental agencies for Google.

You're a few years behind the times. Maybe you haven't noticed, but this administration has been controlling the media for more than a few years.

I believe the Red Cross heard complaints from suspected terrorists. Were you really wanting to derail this thread though by getting into this discussion?
