Well, actually he was captured and held as a prisoner of war for a short time, but his identity was not discovered so he was finally released. There were thousands of refugees after the war and it was easy to slip through the cracks. He relocated to Argentina and lived in various places in South America under different aliases. If our modern network of intelligence <?>, computer databases, etc. etc. had been available 60 years ago, he probably would have been captured.
