He can obviously say what he wants and I have never heard him berate military personnel that I can recall.

I enjoy his show... however, I don't really think the comparing of general military population and/or potential recruits to Lynndie, a bad example, is very smart even in a joke. I would hate for that sentiment to spread to the soldiers returning from war also, not that it would from Maher's comments....but ill feelings found their way to soldiers from previous wars when the rhetoric got out of control.

Something led Maher to write the joke in that way, that's my concern.

The congressman is overcooking the comments beyond any reason IMO.

Brand, while recognizing that you and i have markedly different ideologies, i would like to say that when you contribute to such discussions, it is my experience that you speak with the voice of reason and restraint.

Yours is an especially good analysis Brand X but I think you're giving the guy too much credit when you suggest that he wrote that odious comment himself .
Wouldn't if be ironic if he got dumped because he read something written by someone who was following orders to write anything that had a bad implication for Bush. Laughing That would be the pinnacle of sweet justice.

No possible way Maher would be bumped from HBO with his ratings especially. I found the joke made me uncomfortable but, then again, that's what it was suppose to do.

What can one expect of a redneck from Alabama? He is probably still getting used to wearing shoes.

A completely unnecessary and unjustified slur against the residents of the state of Alabama.

"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."

i have to take exception to Maher piling on the Lynddie England band wagon. if he wants to criticize treatment of prisoners, he shouldn't be picking on a scapegoat, who also happens to have a learning disability from oxygen-deprivation at birth and will be serving out whatever punishment military justice dispenses.

since i don't get HBO, i don't really care if he's fired; even if he is, he can still express his opinions as a citizen, as opposed to a paid entertainer.

I get that way and hate all republicans when I see George Bush on TV. Particularly when he uses his Christian Beliefs to explain his opposition to fetal cell research. It for me is a very personal subject. My only wish for him is that he become afflicted with one or more of those conditions that his religious beliefs stand in the way of finding a possible cure.

Well, they'll send a guy like Henry Rollins to Afghanistan and Iraq as a USO-sponsored speaker, but they'll accuse Maher of treason?
Gimme a break.

Which has what to do with a scurrilous characterization of the citizens of Alabama as bare-foot rednecks, AU?

I must have missed the memo about Lynddie England being oxygen deprived and LD. I thought she was just plain white trash.

Did she get in under some sort of "If it's good enough for the President it's good enough for the army" program?

Nothing is standing in the way of private companies or persons investing their money into that research, is there?

right Tico, why should we waste taxpayer money on something so stupid when we have a lot of wars and new Iraqi miltary bases to pay for?

Bush said today he wasn't going to waste any taxpayer money on this.

How many taxpayers here were asked about this?

I must have had my answering machine turned off.

If it is such a good idea, can you explain why private dollars aren't being thrown at it?
