Hey there.
I need some help. I want to begin studying Dutch. I have no previous experience with the language and will be primarily studying on my own. Can anyone recommend any good textbooks/dictionaries/CD courses/etc for someone like me?
Thanks for your help.
I took Dutch myself for a semester back in the late 70's and I taught for. languages, so I can tell you that what you need to avoid is something that doesn't provide you with cassettes or CD's so that you can listen and repeat. In other words, you don't want a textbook that just teaches you grammar rules (altho that wouldn't be so bad if all you want to do is read Dutch).
If you want to learn online, you can get free lessons in for. langs. at about.com. Otherwise, if you want to get proficient in speaking and listening, the ALM course (that stands for "audio-lingual method") was really good, or go to Barnes-Noble and pick up the Berlitz or the Pimsleur kits. In addition, the Foreign Service puts out its own kit, also available at B.N.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
