Lightened blonde back to natural blonde few shades darker

I highlighted my naturally blonde hair a few shades and it looks a bit orange-ish when wet. As my roots are growing out I don't want to deal with the hassle of continuing to lighten it. Can I dye it back a few shades darker blonde? How does it all work?
