lowlight question

I have naturally ash blonde hair (about an 8) and currently it is highlighted/lowlighted. I'd like to darken my hair to light brown (maybe a 5 or 6). Is it possible for a stylist to heavily lowlight my hair so that some blonde remains as the "highlights", but the majority of my hair is brown? I'd like to leave some of my natural color in so it adds dimension. Or would it be better to just do an all-over color to achieve the light brown?
