By the way, I haven't seen any of these films. I'm going on press alone. I think Chicago will do very well but I think the nod will go to Kidman for The Hours and they'll also get adapted screenplay. So those will be the consolation prizes for that film. Day-Lewis gets the prize for Best Actor as a sop for Gangs of New York. Nia Vardalos is embraced by the Academy the same way that Affleck and Damon were for Good Will Hunting (after all, having the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time is something that the Academy will find hard to ignore). Bowling for Columbine seems to me to be a shoo-in for Documentary. Hero for Foreign Film because Talk to Her (Pedro Almodovar and I bet I just misspelled his last name) wasn't nominated. And I picked Spirited Away for Best Animated Film because it's anime and is different from the other nominees, which I think will cancel one another out.

My question is - if Eminem raps "Lose Yourself" (from 8 Mile; it's nominated for Best Song), will they bleep him?

Thanks jespah - I've only seen two or three of the nominees myself. Just saw Unfaithful and liked it very much. I'm still hoping Diane Lane can pull it out (no pun intended), but I doubt it seriously, and seeing Nicole win would be great.

Would love to see Michael Moore on stage for Columbine - I hope the typical goofy pick for best documentary doesn't trip him up.

I get the feeling a Kidman win for Best Actress would be less for her acting ability than a H'wood snub at Cruise. Which is unfortunate, because people should win on merit, but we all know that H'wood doesn't necessarily work that way. Salma Hayek did not have a great script for Frida, and she's a first-time nominee if I recall correctly. I don't think Zellwegger will get it because Chicago, by then, will have gotten many awards. Lane I see as a dark horse but it's possible. There's also a possibility of Zellwegger getting it if Chicago sweeps all or most of its categories.

I think Julianne Moore should win something, but I suspect the big Chicago sweep will make Zeta-Jones the winner of Best Supporting Actress, and I see Ms. Moore also being passed over in the Best Actress category in favor of Ms. Kidman. Bates and Streep have both won in the past for Best Actress and I've noticed the Academy doesn't often give out Supporting statuettes after they've given someone a Best statuette. That brings Best Supporting Actress to Zeta-Jones or Latifah and I say Zeta-Jones, partly (and again this is unfair but there you have it) because of her marriage to Michael Douglas. Plus, rightly or wrongly, two nominees from one film tend to be pitted directly against one another, and that means Zeta-Jones will win that mini-competition.

The Best Actor selection, except for Adrian Brody, is all former winners, but the Best Actress selection is all women who have never won. For Best Actor, Nicholson has 3 Best Actor awards and holds the record for male nominees. I don't think they'll recognize him yet again. Brody is a first-time nominee and will just be thrilled to be there. Cage and Day-Lewis have been there before. It's possible that my earlier prediction for Best Adapted Screenplay will be wrong, and that it'll go to Adaptation. If that's the case then I definitely don't see Cage as winning. That leaves us with Caine and Day-Lewis. I may be wrong - I know that the Academy adores Michael Caine but this is a struggle between 2 films which probably won't get other awards, though I think Gangs of NY may be up for Costumes and The Quiet American may be up for Cinematography. If those both are awarded to those respective films, then all bets are off and Nicholson may very well pull it out.

Best Supporting Actor is tricky, but they often award it to a character actor (Best Supporting Actress often goes to a promising newcomer, but it's sometimes a prize for an older actress who hasn't otherwise been recognized for her work). That's why I picked Reilly; also because I think Chicago will sweep in a lot of prizes. But it's also possible that the nod finally will go to Christopher Walken, thereby giving that film what will likely be its only recognition of the night.

Gangs has noms in just about every possible category except makeup and score - I think Caine's nom is the only one for Quiet American - it doesn't have a cinematography nom.

This is what I think will happen. My personal opinion is that BAFTA got it right and that The Pianist and Roman Polanski deserve the top two awards but the Academy don't have the balls for that

I think CHICAGO is going to sweep all the categories it is competitive in, including best Director.
Best Actor should go to Adrien Brody, but I suspect Daniel Day Lewis will win.
Best Supporting Actor will probbaly go to Christopher Walken, but John C. Reilly has an outside chance.
Otherwise I predict it is going to be a CHICAGO night. Scorsese will be snubbed yet again for Best Director, and rightly so--GANGS is not his best work and if he were to get the award it would be in recognition of his past films, not this one.
Polanski DESERVES to win for Best Director, but since when does justice have anything to do with the awards???

We seem to have the same kind of views on this. Its either going to be an all Chicago affair or a more even treatment, I tend to the latter-who knows. It'll be fun finding out !
