Why did my guy friend shake my hand?

My friend and I had hung out together. We both sat down across from each other and he started touching his face with his hand. At first he started tugging on the collar of his shirt for a few seconds, then he started rubbing his mouth area and the sides of his face with his hand throughout the start of our conversation.

Soon after, he started copying my actions. I was touching my lips with the palm of my hand while resting my elbow on the table and soon after he had done the same while I was doing it. Or if I cracked my knuckles, he'd crack his knuckles.

He and I had a really good talk with each other. Before I left, he stuck out his hand for a handshake and I shook it. He's never done that to me before and it's not like I was leaving him forever, just for a month. We plan on seeing each other more after I get back. We've given each other hugs before in the past. Why did he do that?

@Danielle02,
Because he probably thought it would be awkward to hug? No one knows but him.

Pointing his very minute actions so prominently here ... makes him sound like he's possibly high on ecstasy or something.

Were you high on ecstasy ... or perhaps attending drama school and especially a mime/performance art class this semester? I get it that people ... tend to unknowingly mirror other companions when socializing... but you seem a tad too aware of what's going on.

Kind of weirdly burying the lead with this declaration. Maybe he's feeling self-conscious and worried that you actually maybe falling out of friendship for whatever context/reason you chose to leave out here. As Jespah might have said already? Ask your friend what he's thinking or how he feels regarding the near future of the friendship, etc....

@tsarstepan,
Tear, you know your thread asking others if they would want to be immortal?

This.
I don’t want to live forever in a world where someone has to ask a question like this. Well, not because they have to because it’s such a mystery, but are compelled to because they’ve filled their brains with items that have the substance of cotton candy.

So? Some stranger shakes your hand? And do you interpret that as a marriage proposal?
