My friend and I had hung out together. We both sat down across from each other and he started touching his face with his hand. At first he started tugging on the collar of his shirt for a few seconds, then he started rubbing his mouth area and the sides of his face with his hand throughout the start of our conversation.
Pointing his very minute actions so prominently here ... makes him sound like he's possibly high on ecstasy or something.

Were you high on ecstasy ... or perhaps attending drama school and especially a mime/performance art class this semester? I get it that people ... tend to unknowingly mirror other companions when socializing... but you seem a tad too aware of what's going on.

Kind of weirdly burying the lead with this declaration. Maybe he's feeling self-conscious and worried that you actually maybe falling out of friendship for whatever context/reason you chose to leave out here. As Jespah might have said already? Ask your friend what he's thinking or how he feels regarding the near future of the friendship, etc....
