Why is Cantonese(as a dialect alone) the most popular ?

Cantonese is mainly spoken in these three areas: Guangdong ,Hong Kong(SAR) ,Macau(SAR). So why is it more popular than other dialects of Chinese?

Why are there pop songs sung in Cantonese and Mandarin while you can't nearly find one sung in other diaclects?
What is so fascinating about Cantonese?


Do the Cantonese people act differently from the rest of Chinese?
Are they more outgoing and more sophisticated ?
