My brother and his family moved to Blacksburg VA last year.

I visited them in October and liked the area very much. Consequently I am considering it as a possible future retirement site.
(I love it here in Rogue Island too, but the cost of living is pretty steep)

Next week I'm going back to get better acquainted with the area.

I'm focusing more on Roanoke because I like to be in a medium-size city, but also NEAR the country.

Any thoughts, comments, observations about the area?

Roanoke is nice. my cousin is the head of Virginia Amateur Spors and Special Olympics and his offices are there. Some nice clubs. Smith Mountain Lake is wonderful. Go to the Texas Tavern and have a Cheesy Western. the only good thing to come out of Texas.

BVT,

Thanks for the info.

One thing though...

Isn't a cheesy western one with Roy Rogers or Gene Autry in it?

Hamburger(greasy)
Cheese
Fried Egg
Hot Dog relish
Onions

Best served with a bowl of their chili topped with the same relish and onions

Cold Dr. Pepper

It gets no better.

edgar you are of course one of A2K's finest fellows. You can't help where you live. I'm sure Terxas was a wonderful place at one time.

RJB is from VA, but not Roanoke. He might know something about the area though. Is he still having troubles posting?

thanks for the info J_B.

I don't think I know RJB though.

Update:

I visited the Roanoke-Blacksburg area again from 5-6 to 5-11-05 and I have decided to move there.

Right now I am scrambling around fixing little things on my house, and doing some extra landscaping.

I'm hoping to have it on the market w/in 30 days.

I'm hopeful that I'll find a buyer quickly. Everyone that comes to visit seems to love this house and yard. it has a lot of 'curb appeal'.

(I already have four friends and neighbors saying they want to buy it or they want a friend to buy it!)

Good morning, JJorge. I know exactly where Roanoke, VA. is and Blacksburg as well. Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg.

It is a beautiful area and although it's been a while since I was there, you are correct about the location having both rural and city appeal. John of Virginia lives in Charlottesville, which is a couple of hours away.

Hi Letty, Nice to seeya!

Want to hear a good one?

After these several years of writing in isolation* left to my own devices (and vices),
as I get ready to leave sell my house and leave Rogue Island, I was invited to attend an on-going group of R.I. poets which meets to share poems, suggestions, and the wisdom of a mentor who has been teaching and writing for 40+ years.

A little ironic isn't it?

Anyway... Yes, I am still selling my house and leaving, but I'll enjoy the group for as long as I'm here.

* not complete isolation, I DO have a life.
I am talking about isolation from others who are serious about poetry. A2k has been an exception of course and an Oasis in an otherwise arid intellectual environment.

Ah, yes, jjorge, such irony is the stuff that dreams are made of, but I am so pleased that you can share with those who care about poetry. Let us know how it all turns out, my Rogue Island friend. <smile>

Blacksburg Area
My family is also looking to relocate to Blacksburg. We would really like to hear from some parents who have children with special needs in middle or high school. We've heard the school system is really great with special needs' kids, but would like to hear directly from some parents.

Hi, bjn. This thread has gotten a little dormant, but I did notice your post. Blacksburg is dominated by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (mercifully know as VPI), one of the largest universities in Virginia. I suspect that they do have a good school program for kids with special needs. I don't know of any A2Ker from that area. I would suggest you contact both the school system itself and VPI (perhaps the admissions office; you might just say you are thinking of applying and would like more info about the area and your concerns).

It is a beautiful part of the state. I am in Charlottesville, a couple of hours away, where the University of Virginia (can you say Thomas Jefferson) is located. We feel that we are quite superior ("All dirt roads lead to Blacksburg") but Roanoke/Blacksburg is a nice area.
