Rewrite the following sentences in the correct order to form a paragraph.
1- It can help us to understand our own.
2- Different aspects of a different culture can both excite and disappoint a foreign visitor.
3- We learn a lot with another culture.
4- Getting in contact with a second culture can bring about difficulties, since we are faced with different ways of living.
What´s the correct order to make a paragraph?(you can just write the numbers e.g - 1,2,4,3). Can you have more than one right combination?
Where did you get this?
First these sentence are terrible. You have "different" twice and a split verb in #2. Second, they do not fit together to form and support one idea, that is, make a paragraph.
That being said:
#1 must follow #3 in order for the pronoun "it" to refer to a singular antecedent, in this case "culture".
Of the two remaining sentences, I would favor #4 then #2. Though, as they make seperate ascertians, neither supports the other.
So, I'd say 4, 2, 3, 1
Paragraph sequence - Would you agree with 2431?
Thank you very much for answering my question.
Would you consider starting with sentence number 2 then, developing the paragraph to 2431? Someone told me that you should start with number 2 because it contains positive and negative aspects and thus you start from the general idea to the particular one.
Again, I am wondering where you got this. If it was on an English test (GRE review etc) I am appalled at the grammar and word choice.
I considered 2 then 4-- but I went the other way.
I was thinking getting in touch should come first, as the introductory phrase sems to house the first step... getting in touch with a second culture. (second?)
What´s wrong with "second culture"
Thanks so much for your comments. This exercice was taken from an English test from the school I study in Brazil. It caused great discussions.
In the end, the answer key corfirmed the 4231 order.
I am learning English and it is part of the learning process to understand what went wrong with the questions I got wrong. Thus, it is forums like this that help a lot of people who do not have the chance to hear from a native speaker. Thanks again for the opportunity and for the interest in helping others. Keep on the great work.
P.s Can you tell me what is the problem with "second" in "second culture?
the "second" i think is not really wrong, just not necessarily correct. it may or may not be a second culture. it could be a third or a first or whatever. i think what would be more precise is to say "another" culture, not "a second" culture
True
Congratulations on the English. You articulate your ideas very clearly!
My bigger issue was the three differents in four sentences-- esp. "different aspects of a different culture".
