During desert storm - I used to get emails every couple days from my buddy in the AirForce. My son's friend his dad is home from the gulf now, behind the lines guy sent emails about 2 times a week.
Also one another site I belonged to there was a Navy guy that seemed to have internet access about everyday. I wouldn't have believed it but I couple of other guys personally knew him and when he was shipped out to sea.
