The American GIs, now in service in the Middle East, have free internet service. Is there any way, we can get these men and women to post on A2K? Very Happy

Heck of a good idea, New Haven. I don't know, either.

I do not think that they should be exposed to the discussions on the war they are supposed to take part in, that we have here. It may affect motivation. Not all of the soldiers are savvy enough in statistics to understand that the group of people posting here is not a representative one (in terms of general population of the USA)...

Still, steissd, they might add a new and different viewpoint - just as you do.

Soldiers are out of politics: this was the rule in all the armies I have ever come across. Is not this rule valid in the U.S. Army?

I believe this is true, but conversation is not politics.

I wonder about this internet thing though. Corrospondence from war zones is frequently censored. Could this be done on the internet?

Yeah, I'd rather not see them exposed to war talk. My problem is with the politicians. Not with the guys stuck following their orders.

Surely, it can be. How did the legislators want to implement a law against the kids' access to pornographic sites? The same techniques may be used for contents filtering in the Army. Surely, there is a server providing access of the soldiers to the WWW. And there is a team of administrators that can include someone having censorship functions. Granted, the soldiers are not small kids, porn may be uncensored; but access to different pacifist sites that may affect moral of the Army, I guess, is restricted.

The men and women who will be fighting the Second Gulf War would probably not have too much time for A2k.

They have some time off each week. On the ships, they have one day off per week for fun and they also get on that day, 2 free beers.

I'll bet they're on some internet chat groups.

If only they'd find A2K...just for some fun for them.

As far as their information sources, remember they talk to home, once a week also ( maybe even more often). They're aware of the sentiments of Americans regarding the war. Most Americans support the War effort, President Bush and our brave troops.

I applaud the idea, but it isnt feasible.
I was there in Ieaq till I got wounded in Nasiriyeh, and the whole time I was there I never got near a computer.Unless the front line units are "lucky" enough to have a reporter with them, then chances are they wont see ant kind of computer.
When you go in the field you dont have the room to carry one,its more impt to carry food, water, ammunition, and all the other supplies a soldier needs.

I doubt many of those in the Gulf region have the time or access to play with discussion groups much. "Access" is still limited to a small number of PCs being shared amongst several hundred (or thousand) people. When that 1 day break comes around they may get 5 or 10 minutes on one of them to e-mail family and friends.

Would you as a serviceperson in harms way want to read some of the negative remarks about them and the government from US citizens? What a morale "booster" that would be.

I've read worse while out deployed to some hell-hole in nowheresville. Most of the current stuff out there is pretty tame compared to the things that were said about Carter, Reagan, etc..

The military members that are deployed aren't stupid and it isn't like they've been isolated for years. They know what is going on.

We have 838 members who have posted. Please illustrate that 420 of them did not support the troops.

I am tired of the feckless accusations of the self-appointed police of Un-American activities here. Please back it up.

That is not what I observe on a2k. A majority do not support the action in Iraq or president Bush. That has nothing to do with un-American activities just what I see. In addition I said nothing about being un-American.

au,

There are a select few on this site who like to make arbitrary and often false declarations about the membership on the whole.

It's simplistic, fallacious and demeaning. They think they are open minded while deciding that the "whole site" or the "overwhelming majority" are not worth listening to. The irony is lost on them and they feel justified in feeling so objective while maintaining a sneering distaste for a membership they like to pidgeon hole and disregard.

It happens with people of all political inclinations and it is a pet peeve of mine.

I realize that this is not the case here and yes, I've gone overboard in the Un-American thing with you. My apologies. My irritation is largely from other sources.

This kind of thing just really bugs me.
