The carrier America, decommissioned in 1996, is moored at a Navy yard in Philadelphia. The Navy plans to tow it to sea on April 11 - possibly stopping at Norfolk - before taking it to the deep ocean. GEORGE WIDMAN / ASSOCIATED PRESS

I will provide a link to the story.

A ship that large has never been sunk before. They want to gather info to be used in the construction of new ships.

The destroyer I served on was sold to a foreign nation and stripped for parts.

This is so interesting to me. I can't believe they're going to sink it, but it will be a terrific experiment. I guess. ..?

I think bein' sacrificed in the quest for knowledge that will make future warships more resistant to battle damage, more surviveable in the combat arena, is a far more noble, and desireable, end than bein' cut up in the breaker's yard.

One of the Navy's first, and one of WWII's most illustrious, carriers, Saratoga, was sacrified durin' the Bikini Atoll A-Bomb tests of 1946. Tough old girl; it took two nuclear basts to finish her. HazeGray: Saratoga CC 3 - CV 3
