The (Great?) Bahstin Plastic Bag Ban of 2019

Quote:
City of Boston's plastic bag ban ordinance, passed in early December of 2017,
is set to take effect on December 14, 2018. The ordinance states that any
“checkout bags” provided by retailers to customers must be a reusable bag,
a recyclable paper bag, or a compostable plastic bag.

so far this week, my lunch has been placed into plastic bags two times out of four.

not sure how much of this is "well, we need to use up our supply", and how much of it is
"screw the ban, they can't tell us what to do"...

we started bringing our own reusables to the supermarket many years ago.
they are adhering to the ban...

@Region Philbis,
In Portland it goes by county. I can't get plastic bags at the store 1 mile from my house but I can get them at the store 1.5 miles from my house.

We live about 5 minutes from the dead middle of the city so it's not like we're out in the burbs or anything, just close to a county line. The Metro area consists of 7 counties in two states so you never really know which rule the stores have to follow.

It's weird.

We are an English class in Switzerland. We are from Therwil Secondary School. That is in the canton of Baselland. In our retailer stores we have to pay 5 Rappen (about 5 cents) for one plastic bag. We do not know about the other Swiss cantons. Recycling is a big issue in Switzerland.

@englischklasse,
I'm wondering what you Googled to find this topic. Welcome, by the way. Smile

There was a five cent a bag ordinance passed here a couple of years ago. It was never uniformly applied, and now, many places don't charge for the bags. It's something that would be hard to enforce, and I suspect many places are more interested in the customers' good will.

There is no talk of a ban here, but we always bring reusable bags for groceries. Other stores where we shop still keep us supplied with the plastic bags.

@Setanta,
spaced on taking the reusables today

one place doesn't offer any bags - you have to carry stuff out in your hands if you didn't bring bags

the other charged 5 cents a bag. s'ok. I actually needed about 15 cents more on my bill to get a 4000 point loyalty bonus (worth $4). gimme the bags

@jespah,
Hi Jespah!
We currently have the topic of plastic waste / Great Pacific Garbage Patch in our English textbook. So our English teacher searched the internet for forums where we could read and post about it. By the way: Where do you live?
Greetings from Switzerland...

@Region Philbis,
I wish NYC would institute this environmental policy. But we have an idiotic city councilman or state rep (can't remember which) who's trying to claim the ban is part of a class war against the poor. Rolling Eyes

In my neighborhood, empty plastic bags roam the streets like tumble weeds. I try and pick up at least one from the ground every day (to throw away in a corner trash can).
