...still damn waiting today!
I went to Parramatta (Sydney's Western 'heart') for an interview Wednesday afternoon. It was for a Records Management role with a State authority.
Turned up on time and found the place (last interview at Parramatta I was lost and turned up 10 minutes late! Bad form!). Interview was more of an informal affair - only one person and they're the manager of the section. Fine.
Strange sort of start. I had been sent a very brief list of the tasks to be performed. She asks, "So what do think the job is?". Odd - seeing that she's the one recruiting and she wants me to describe it to her. Usually they give you a big run-down on the position and its relevance to the organisation.
I sort of tackle the question and she opens up and starts filling in some blanks. Maybe she just wants to see if potential staff won't 'freeze' when asked tricky questions.
Most of the stuff is pretty standard records management, same software package as I have used in another 4-5 jobs. Only thing is that it's going to involved a fair bit of training of other staff. This isn't my strength- I usually do it on a 'one-on-one' basis and not all that frequently either.
I'm upbeat about my ability to train larger groups and stuff, but it's an obvious weakness. I manage to answer all other questions and throw in a bit about how I also tried in various contract positions to help change some of the work culture at places and make suggestions/changes to practices, etc.
Finish up - 40 minute interview. Not bad.
I catch the train and start heading North to home. Then I get a call from the consultant who has set up the interview. Usually he's pretty laid back, but right now he's almost excitable. He starts firing off questions about what I thought about the manager and the job and whether I was ready to do it.
Then, he wants the names of REFEREES!! This is usually when you're close to being picked. An important and big step - and I'm only about 30 minutes out of the interview!!
Wow! That sounds really promising, Mr. S. No wonder your tail is wagging.
I cross my fingers Stillwater - you have a bit luck coming
your way
Ah. This is the little... problem. It is now well and truely past 5pm on Friday and I have NOT heard back from the consultant!
The words popping (unbidden) into my head are 'dead meat'. Not pleasant.
I am also officially unemployed. And drunk. Tho don't tell that to any potential employers, girls.........
Sometimes it takes a while to get onto all the refereees, Stilly. Don't go calling yourself dead meat yet! That was only yesterday.
Fingers crossed!
They haven't called me yet, but I'll give 'em a good one.
yep - just send 'em to me - I'll tell them what they need to know!
Parra - bit of a pain from the central coast!? Not to mention those bloody eels!
Monday isn't all that far away.
Those reference calls have to be made.
That they asked for them quickly is marvellous!
Still waiting!!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggghhh!!
I hope everything works out for Mr. Stillwater.
What a pain! How much time do you have to wait before you can call and inquire about whether the position has been filled?
Dead meat! Dead meat on a stick! The vultures are circling*.........
*not sure if they are African or Sth American tho.

You didn't get it, Stilly? Or still waiting?
