It refers to a boat - which, when it is tossed severely by high waves, rolls enough that water is taken on board.

It means to be threatened, to be in difficulties.

Our cute resident bunny knows right! Not a good sign on the high seas.

Not only there is a "low sea" but also a "lowest sea" aka Dead Sea. Laughing

Walter -- Very Happy

I thought that water over the side referred to the disasters that happen when a boat (or situation) was no longer being carefully or properly mastered, ie. not cutting though the waves and facing a strong wind or having too much onboard for its size.

It is definitely not a good sign though generally it can be resolved successfully by early jettisoning of cargo or by quickly steering into the wind.

I notice you, Roger. I thought you were very funny.

Our first boat was named for my mother -- the Mary C. Very Happy and we were always jolly onboard, too.

Okay, and I'll give you a raincheck, too, Walter. Next time you're feeling ignored, abused, and poorly treated, make sure I know about it.
