I'm looking for an inscription in Latin, to engrave on a heliochronometer, in celebration of a 40th birthday and 10th wedding anniversary.
My husband wants "per ardua ad astra", and I'm still sulking...
What sort of thing would you want it to say?
Maybe there's a fitting quote in Latin, or maybe we could make one up.
Not that this is any help at all, but if it were my sundial, I'd use:
Umbra scit
The shadow knows
I'm still pondering, but my other half now suggests "Happy now?", which had us both laughing, at least.
Ponder away. Let me know what you come up with.
My Grandfather, who was a Naval Commander, had a sundial with
"Time and tide waits for no man". I'm curious how that would read in Latin. Anyone willing to have a go? Thank you for 'Umbra scit', by the way, - I found it a little spooky..
Tempus aestusque neminem exspectant.
Time and tide wait for no man.
Running out of time now, and we're feeling pretty good about "Only the beginning", provided it sounds ok in Latin. Any suggestions?
One online service indicated it would be 'tantum exordium', but that feels a bit depressing...
Only the beginning
