Newsflash
The Athens Banner Herald has discovered that openly Christian university professors feel a bit out of sorts on the University of Georgia and other American campuses these days.
Several openly Christian professors tell the paper that it's odd that they are considered eccentrics worthy of ridicule on campus when their views actually coincide with the majority of Americans. People who profess to be open-minded close shop when it comes to religion, they say, or at least some forms of religion.
"If supposedly open-minded intellectuals made the kind of remarks about people of Jewish faith that they make about Southern Baptists, they would be penalized, if not sued, for libel or slander, or denounced for their bigotry," English professor Jonathan Evans tells the paper.
Students Have Rights, Too?
A former California high school student has sued his alma mater seeking to change a policy restricting speech that "by its nature, may be disruptive," reports the Marin Independent Journal.
Former Novato High School student Andrew Smith, now 21, came under fierce attack for writing in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 an article for the student paper criticizing illegal immigrants. He says the article was inspired by the fact that most of the terrorists were in the country unlawfully.
Officials at the Novato School District confiscated copies of the paper and apologized for the column after a group of Latino students called it racist and staged a walk-out over it.
The Perils of Marketing for Multiple Cultures
Swedish furniture-maker IKEA was accused of sexual discrimination for featuring only men in the instruction manuals that come with its flat-pack coffee tables and bookcases, reports Reuters.
Because it fears offending Muslims with pictures of women, the company routinely uses only men or cartoon figures of indeterminate sex in its manuals.
Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik of Norway, however, called the practice discriminatory and is demanding that it stop.
Those Pesky Prayers
Managers of a charity-run senior citizens center in Arkansas has been forced to ban folks at the center from saying a prayer before their meals because someone threatened to sue if the practice isn't halted, according to the Russellville Courier-Times.
Board members of the Friendship Community Care have halted pre-meal prayers at its senior activity center until they can get clarification from lawyers about the legality of the practice.
Local resident Philip Mullins prompted the debate by writing a letter asking that the public prayer be discontinued. He threatened to file a lawsuit against the organization for infringing on his religious beliefs if it continued.

Giant Leaps
The Evening Standard of London says school officials in the UK have banned sexist insults from school playgrounds because they make boys feel superior to girls and might lead to domestic violence.
The National Unions of Teachers has instructed its members to step into any fray in which words like "slag," "slut," "lezzie" are heard being uttered by boys. Girls will not be allowed to direct such terms at each other either.
A leaflet circulated to schools says: "Sexist language and playground banter that seeks to legitimise violence against women should be challenged."

Back to You, NCAA
Students and administrators at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke are resisting pressure from the NCAA to change the name of their team name, the Braves, to something less racially offensive, reports the Associated Press.
The NCAA has compiled a list of about 30 schools with Native American logos, nicknames or mascots that it wants replaced. But UNC-Pembroke officials said the Braves logo is part of their heritage, and wouldn't ya know it -- they're right.
The university campus is in the center of the region the Lumbee tribe calls home and was founded exclusively for Native Americans in 1887. It's didn't integrate until 1953, and about 20 percent of current students are Native American.
"The thing about it athletically was, when it was all American Indians, the leaders at the school and the student body referred to themselves as Braves," Athletic Director Dan Kenney said. "Nothing has changed. Our community wants that link back to our origins."

Racist Taunts?
High school basketball fans in Oregon who carried on the time-honored tradition of taunting an opposing player while he was making free-throw shots are accused of being racist for suggesting that he was sub-par academically, reports the Oregonian.
In a game between Lincoln and Lake Oswego high schools, Lake Oswego fans began chanting, "You can't read!" when Lincoln's Omar Leary was shooting free throws. They also yelled in unison, "Sixth-year senior!"
Because all the starters at Lake Oswego High are white and Leary is one of five African American starters on Lincoln's team, the taunts were deemed racist.
Lake Oswego Principal Bruce Plato called in every student suspected of participating in the chants for questioning and a discussion about racial sensitivity. At least eight students have been told to write letters of apology to Lincoln High."
These are just some of the examples of PC stupidity in this country.
They would be funny if they werent so stupid.
